Josephs(R): The Service Manufactory

Author: R. Srinivasan

This English case on JOSEPHS® intends to highlight the various network effects in the architecture and operations of a Service Manufactory. Uniquely positioned as an open innovation laboratory in the Nuremberg city center, JOSEPHS® attracted a wide range of walk-in customers, who could be "prosumers", adding significant value to the tenant/firms, the university partner (FAU Wi1), Fraunhofer IIS, as well as the consumers themselves as they engage in the open innovation process. This case articulates the architecture and design of JOSEPHS® as a platform, elucidates the network effects and complementarities, and pushes the students to analyze the various parameters of performance in a multi-sided platform such as JOSEPHS®.

Interactive customers as a challenge: The case study "JOSEPHS® - The service manufactory"

Authors: Angela Roth, Albrecht Fritzsche, Julia Jonas, Frank Danzinger, Kathrin M. Möslein

Customers want often to contribute. At least the product that is in the end available for them to buy should, as far as possible, meet individual wishes or be customizable to each and every customer.
This trend has continued for decades and has led to shifting the focus of companies towards customer orientation and that is indicated by e.g., the number of options and customization possibilities offered for a product. The research has reacted to the phenomenon with concepts of interactive value creation as open innovation and mass customization, that allow productivity despite the customization, as well as product efficiency despite the product diversity.

At the end you have to fill out a seemingly endless questionnaire about which one, why and how it  tasted better. This is called market research. That market research but in a completely different way is shown by the FAU university and Fraunhofer in the JOSEPHS laboratory.

alexander - news from the Friedrich-Alexander-University

Who profits when a customer is satisfied with a product? The customer, of course, because the jacket fits, the shoe does not squeeze and the glasses have the correct color. The manufacturer also, because the product returns cost money.
That  is why, it is not only about perfecting the final product but also about knowing the needs and wishes of the customers. But how can one find out what the customer wants when shopping? This is exactly what Prof. Dr. Kathrin Möslein, PD Dr. Angela Roth und Julia Jonas from the Chair of Information Systems I also asked. The result is a collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS: The JOSEPHS © is a place where the consumers get involved, shape and have a say before a product or service is ready for the market.

Service-Orientierung im Mittelstand

Authors: Bettina Hofmann, Tim Posselt, Oliver Fuhrmann, Angela Roth

The book is published in German.

Do companies take into account the great importance of services in their internal processes?
In a service-oriented and globally connected world, companies must be willing and able to take advantage of the opportunities quickly and decisively. The basis for this is that companies align their organizational structure and internal processes to the customer needs in the service business. Service orientation is examined within Customer Relationship Management, Human Resource Management and New Service Development.
